Fire and Emergency Support Service
The fire service will call out or page specially trained members
of the British Red Cross service to assist them with people or animals
that have been displaced from their homes or work place because
of fire, flooding or structural instability. The fire service welcomes
this service as it assists them and the victims involved, allowing
the fire service on scene to get on with dealing with the situation
in hand.
Limitations & availability of the service
The service is an all year round operation. A two person crew will
be on call by pager or phone, backed up with additional staff or
teams if required. Upon call from fire control, the crew will make
their way to the fire station where the vehicle is located. The
Fire & Emergency Support Unit (F.E.S.U) where possible will be mobile within
a maximum thirty minutes from the station, and on scene within an
hour and a half from the time of call.
Membership
Members do not get paid for this service but they do get expenses
to cover their costs, and they say it is very rewarding and interesting
work. Members are trained in a combination of skills over a four
month probation period, with ongoing training after that. This allows
them to fully interact with the Fire Service for the roles they
undertake.
This work is both mentally and physically challenging. If you feel
that this is something you would be interested in or want to know
more, please contact the Webmaster
who will put you in touch with the service co-ordinator
in your county.
